Why You Should Switch to Menstrual Cups (GIVEAWAY!!!)

Last week I was caught in a situation. The crimson wave had decided to come early and I did not have my menstrual cup with me. I was forced to buy pads and I was so shocked to see that one pack cost R45! When I first bought my menstrual cup I thought it was pricey but I knew that it would work out as an affordable investment in a few months. What I did not realize was that 5 packs of pads cost as much as my menstrual cup that I can reuse for 5 years.

I have been wanting to write this post for a very long time and now I finally can along with my favorite brand MyOwnCup. MyOwnCup is a company dedicated to turning the world green with the use of menstrual cups. They are the company who I got my first, current and only menstrual cup from over a year ago. They also run The Inkululeko Project which provides girls with menstrual cups giving them a sustainable re-usable sanitary solution which keeps them from staying home from school.

Along with MyOwnCup I am running a giveaway* so that I can give two of my readers their very own menstrual cup. To be eligible for the giveaway repost my latest photo on Instagram, tag me and then comment below which size you would like to win between small and large when you're done.

Whenever I tell people about menstrual cups they are intimidated but let me reassure you that using them is no harder than using a tampon. I actually prefer them because I can wear them for a longer time and even overnight. Alright now lets get into why you should make the switch to menstrual cups.

Affordable Investment
South African women can spend up to R2000 a year on tampons and pads. Menstrual cups might seem expensive at first but when you realize that it is a once off payment for the next 5 years it is completely different. MyOwnCup's menstrual cups retail for around R200. That's R40 a year as opposed to R2000.

Hypoallergenic
The main reason I made the change to menstrual cups because I started developing a sensitivity to both tampons and pads. Menstrual cups are made with medical grade, non-absorbant material does not contain any silicone, proteins, PVC, latex, bleach, deodorant or absorbing gels and is therefore hypoallergenic. After switching to menstrual cups all my irritations went away and I have comfortable periods now.

Menstrual cups do not contain the many toxic chemicals that pads and tampons contain. They are also not associated with Toxic Shock Syndrome like tampons are.

Sustainable
Menstrual cups is reusable for up to 5 years, easily cleaned and sterilized. Pads and tampons create a lot of waste. The average woman uses 20 pads/tampons per month, which equates to 240 per year which equates to 9600 in a lifetime. When you multiply that by the 3.5 billion women on earth it is an insane amount of avoidable waste.

Easy To Clean
Menstrual cups are easily cleaned by using a mild, unscented water-based (oil-free) soap. Sterilizing them is also easy as all you have to do is boil the cup for 10 minutes.

Comfortable
When inserted correctly you do not feel the cups and you can go about your day as normal. I have done yoga, gone hiking and swimming with my cup and had zero issues.

Hopefully this has educated you a little on the benefits of menstrual cups and convinced you to make the change. If it has you can enter my giveaway* of one of MyOwnCup's menstrual cups by reposting my latest photo on Instagram, tag me and then comment below which size you would like to win between small and large when you're done.

  1. Menstrual cups are just so much better for all the reasons you mentioned. My personal fav is how much money I've saved over these past few years.
